Learning Disabilities Division

An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, passionate and experienced SLT to join the Birmingham Community Team within the Adult Learning Disability Service.

The Adult Learning Disability Service is a provider of care for adults with learning disabilities aged 19 and over across Birmingham. We are dedicated to providing high-quality services that are close to where people live and are person centred to enable people with a learning disability to live their best lives.

You will work with multidisciplinary colleagues in meeting the needs of individuals requiring Communication and some Dysphagia support.

You will have access to professional support from experienced clinicians and will receive regular clinical supervision.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertakes differential diagnosis of complex cases within a learning disability caseload.
  • Uses specialist knowledge to inform clinical judgments and decision making in complex cases.
  • Structures clear therapy plans based on best practice and is able to adapt to individual client needs and priorities.
  • Recognises breakdown or conflict when it occurs and generates solutions.
  • Manages complex caseload independently.
  • Negotiates with Speech & Language Therapy colleagues, other professionals and carers with reference to case management of complex cases.
  • Assesses, develops and implements highly specialist programmes of care and treatment to meet the needs of clients.
  • Records and maintains up-to-date clinical case notes in line with professional standards and trust policies.
  • Will manage a caseload which includes people with complex eating and drinking problems, dealing with issues of mortality, morbidity and ethical dilemmas.
  • Deals independently with clients who are at risk of potential/actual abuse.
  • Deals independently with highly complex clients whose behaviour is so significantly challenging as to cause extreme harm to self and others.
  • Uses highly developed communication skills to explain complex condition related information from assessment/therapy plan to clients/carers and multi disciplinary team members.

You will be part of BCHC Community Learning Disability Service of which the Community Team offers services within five localities. You will be part of an MDT that offer safe, high quality care and promote a great place to work with health and wellbeing offers, staff networks and the opportunity for career development and progression.

Job responsibilities
  • A highly skilled practitioner in the assessment and treatment of communication difficulties and eating and drinking difficulties within specialist complex caseloads of people with learning disability, who provides second opinions for other Speech & Language Therapists within and outside of the department.
  • Contributes to the identification of training needs of the Speech & Language Therapists and other professionals and carries out training within the Learning Disabilities Service.
  • Leads research and audit within Learning Disabilities Service.
  • Leads projects and service redesign within the Learning Disabilities Service.
  • Is responsible for clinical supervision of Specialist Speech & Language Therapists, Speech & Language Therapy Practitioners and Assistants and Students working within the Learning Disabilities Service.
Person Specification Qualifications/training
  • First degree in SLT and/or Masters postgraduate qualification relevant to SLT
  • HCPC Licence to practise
  • Registered with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Dysphagia Post Qualification Training/Qualification
Qualifications/training
  • Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area.
Experience
  • Experience as a qualified therapist with significant experience in specialist area.
Other job requirements
  • Is able and willing to move around the city
Experience
  • Significant experience of specific assessment and therapy techniques which require a technical skill.
  • Highly specialist management of a diverse and complex caseload.
Skills/Knowledge
  • Ability to use evidence base to inform clinical practice in a specialist area
  • Knowledge of the needs of a diverse population and the impact on communication and swallowing problems.
  • Ability to develop highly specialist programmes of care
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and overcomes barriers to communication.
  • Is able to manage and balance a range of risks to maximise patient care.
  • Is able to write clear reports and notes to a professional standard, especially when the content is complex.
  • Is able to use alternative means of communication appropriately for care group
  • Is IT literate.
  • Has highly developed empathy, negotiation and influencing skills with demonstrable clinical leadership.

  • Can prioritise own workload and that of others and has insight into own coping strategies in stressful situations.
  • Is able to reflect on own clinical practice and initiate appropriate changes.
Other job requirements
  • Is able to work in various locations according to the needs of the patients.
  • Is able to carry a variety of equipment between locations safely.
