NSHI have a vacancy for a Band 6 Registered General Nurse (NMC Registered) to facilitate and support headache patients in receiving therapy reviews and optimum treatment within Queen Elizabeth II Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust (QEHB).
Location: Based primarily at QE II Birmingham hospital headache centre, a tertiary centre.
Salary: FTE £47,500 per annum (2.5 days pro-rata = £23,750)
Contract Type: 12 months fixed-term contract. Part time, equivalent to 2.5 days per week (maximum 18.75 hours per week), with flexible working patterns considered

The hospital, which is located in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston, brings together services previously provided at the older hospital and at the nearby Selly Oak Hospital. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK's only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC).
The headache service at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, is a tertiary centre which services a large area. With a large cohort of existing patients and growing demand on the service from a wide radius, the waiting list to see a specialist has significantly increased over the last few years.
The successful candidate will be an active member of the neurology team and will contribute to improving the management and support of patients with headache conditions. They will also play a key role in service development, pathway optimisation, and collaborative working across the wider multidisciplinary team.
Minimum requirements- Band 6 RGN
- Current NMC Registration - Registered Nurse - Adult Level
- Experience in Neurology and Pain Management
- Take a comprehensive headache history recorded in clinical noting.
- Confirm patient eligibility based on NICE Therapy Approval Guidance (TAG) criteria and ensure there are no contraindications to treatment
- Provide clear, evidence-based information to the patient regarding mechanism of action, potential benefits and side effects and administration method
- Obtain informed consent to initiate therapy, once prescribed selected treatment by NHS prescriber
- Register the patient with the appropriate Homecare delivery company
- Verify and document accurate patient details
- Arrange nurse training if required for self-injection
- Input relevant data into clinical monitoring spreadsheets for audit, safety, and effectiveness tracking, accessed by the headache team.
- Assess treatment response and determine ongoing eligibility at three months after initiation according to NICE TAG continuation criteria
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records related to CGRP therapy initiation, monitoring, and follow-up if treatment is ineffective or not tolerated
- Discuss and recommend further alternative treatment options
- Adjust the management plan accordingly
- Monitor and document any side effects
- Report significant or suspected adverse events through relevant pharmacovigilance systems (e.g. MHRA Yellow Card)
- Evaluate the need for a treatment break in patients meeting the criteria
- Ensure timely scheduling of follow-up reviews to support continuity of care and treatment assessment
- Provide tailored advice on acute migraine medications and lifestyle modifications to help reduce attack frequency and severity
- Where appropriate, recommend and initiate oral preventive treatments in patients not eligible for CGRP mAbs
- Review the need for ongoing oral preventatives in patients responding well to CGRP therapy
- Discontinue oral treatments if appropriate, based on clinical judgment/discussion with consultant and patient preference
- Answer e-mails pertaining to simple queries such as administration instructions, Homecare delivery updates and lifestyle advice
- Manage communication with Homecare delivery services via Homecare Pharmacy team at Trust
- Schedule initiation and follow up, face-to-face and tele appointments
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary team for input where required
- Compile and update treatment data in spreadsheets for audit and service evaluation purposes accessed by the headache team.
