Job overview

This post is an exciting opportunity for a full time Registered Dental Nurse to join a multidisciplinary team and support the specialty to ensure the provision of a high standard of patient care for a fixed term period of six months. This is a great opportunity to develop and expand your skills as a dental nurse to the next level.

Clinics you will assist in include Oral surgery, Skin procedures under local anaesthetic, day surgery theatre list, IV sedation and minor operations, Orthodontics and specialised clinics such as Orthognathic. You will need to be a highly motivated and confident member of the team. Our patients will expect and will receive the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team.

You will need to be registered on the GDC Register. The hours required are: Monday 8.30-5pm; Tuesday 8.30-5pm; Wednesday 8.30-5pm; Thursday 8.30-5pm; Friday 8.30-4.30pm.

As stated above this is a fixed term contract for six months

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a Registered Dental nurse interested in developing the service to our patients. We would welcome any applications for this Band 4 role for those with experience in Dental nursing and/or Orthodontics.

We would also consider newly qualified Dental nurses with the relevant experience. We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and compassionate nurse with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to help us deliver outstanding treatment and care to our patients. You will be responsible for the setting up and closing/cleaning down of your surgery and maintaining stock levels. Assisting clinicians in all clinics within our specialty. We are looking for someone who is team focused. The candidate needs active registration with The General Dental Council (GDC).

Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional CPD.

We have 10 Registered Dental Nurses within a busy outpatient department. We are part of a wider hub/spoke site including Northwick Park Hospital, Hillingdon and Wexham Park but you will be based at Watford General only. The oral and maxillofacial and orthodontics department work with a multidisciplinary team which covers a variety of head and neck procedures. We also have a Specialty Doctor team in the department and a strong training ethos.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a safe working environment using measures to reduce cross infection as per Trust policy.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team, including giving of advice and information following procedures or relating to specialist conditions, including emotionally distressing situations.

To organise and provide chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics.

To assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, IV sedation and general anaesthetic, lasting up to an hour.

To organise, prepare and assist with specialist clinics e.g., Orthognathic, Skin lists.

Prepare medical and orthodontic notes for clinics including obtaining investigation results from computerised systems e.g., MRI and CT scans.

Obtaining Orthodontic appliances from the laboratory.

Responsible for recording and storage of patient study models of patients currently undergoing treatment.

Take on responsibility for personal development and support the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge.

Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to less experienced and new staff at all times.

Work proactively to ensure that every patient attendance meets the patient's expectations and needs with timely undertaking of procedure and effective communication with relatives, patients and carers.

Person specification Education and qualifications
  • A good level of Secondary Education
  • National Certificate of Dental Nursing or NVQ level 3 is a baseline requirement.
  • Registration on the GDC Register.
Knowledge
  • Specific knowledge in both Maxillofacial and Orthodontics
Experience
  • Numerous years chair side/relevant experience.
  • Previous experience within a hospital environment
