Job Title: AWS & Node.js Senior Software Engineer

Salary: £57,000- £67,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Band: D

Location: Office Base is Salford, MediaCityUK, Dock House. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working. Office attendance is required each Wednesday. Infrequent travel to the office with be required for adhoc TV device access, i.e. debugging live issues.

Purpose Of The Role

The BBC is one of the UK's most well-known and loved brands. The iPlayer & Sounds product teams build some of the most used products in BBC: our mission is to be the first place for anybody to go to watch or listen to BBC content.

The Interactive TV teams within this department build and support the BBC's 'big screen' experiences, including iPlayer, Sounds and live events across our broadcast and connected TV platforms.

We're looking for enthusiastic Senior Software Engineers to join our agile team, where you'll help shape the future of TV products for millions of viewers. This role blends platform engineering, and developer experience, offering the chance to work on diverse technical challenges that drive our teams forward.

Based in MediaCityUK, Salford, you'll join our TV Enablement team to deliver a world-class connected TV experience for BBC iPlayer and Sounds.

Your work will contribute to the TV application platform, and you will develop and maintain tooling used by other teams. You will have an opportunity to work on software at a scale that is hard to find in the country - this is your opportunity to help define how our audiences engage with the BBC on the big screen.

Interview Process

One stage virtual assessment centre combining a live pair programming test and an interview with our software engineering teams.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

Join a dynamic team to architect, deliver, and evolve Node.js & AWS solutions addressing complex challenges that impact multiple internal teams and critical audience services. In this role, you will:

  • Be an advocate for an inclusive culture, and help all members of the team contribute to work and be heard.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering professional growth.
  • Create and adapt solutions using AWS services, to manage high traffic applications that serve millions of users every day
  • Integrate monitoring and support tools to achieve operational excellence.
  • Utilise modern testing standards and techniques to ensure code meets functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Lead technical projects from understanding requirements through to completed delivery.
  • Play an active role in agile planning, delivery processes, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with several other multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Create, review, and maintain comprehensive technical documentation to support current and future development.
Your Skills And Experience
  • Motivation to learn, share knowledge with others, and be able to mentor both junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Experience in architecting and delivering projects using AWS using CloudFormation, Lambda, CloudFront, CodePipeline/CodeBuild, and CloudWatch.
  • Good inter-personal communication skills, and able to communicate effectively with different disciplines, or people of different technical knowledge levels.
  • Experience delivering sizable projects to completion, using agile methodologies, able to break down delivery of solutions from epics to small parallelisable tasks.
  • Knowledge of addressing operational concerns such as monitoring, performance testing, scaling, availability, resilience, and security. Handling incidents, and post-incident review processes.
  • Be a positive proactive influence on your team's culture, ways-of-working, and technical output, skills, and knowledge.

The following are not necessary to apply, but are desirable:

  • In-depth knowledge of AWS technologies, or AWS accreditations/qualifications.
  • Out Of Hours/On Call engineer experience.
  • Knowledge or experience of DORA metrics.
  • Knowledge or experience with SAST/DAST.
  • Experience with complex deployment systems.
  • Experience with mono/multi-tenant repo tooling.
  • Experience with AWS CDK.
  • Knowledge of HbbTV/DVB standards.
