Job Description

Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Tutor to join the teaching team and support the School of Social Sciences this coming Autumn 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Support the undergraduate module Criminology and Social Theory.
  • Deliver 15 hours of seminar teaching (90 minutes per session, 10 weeks) from 8 October 2026 to 17 December 2026.
  • Attend lectures (90 minutes per session, 10 weeks) and supervise seminar groups that meet 90 minutes once a week after lectures (lectures 6-7.30 pm, seminars 7.30-9 pm).
Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience of criminology and social theory.
  • Qualified to the corresponding level of the award required to teach, or evidence of equivalent professional/industry level experience.
Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College. The starting rate is £61.39 per hour (inclusive of pro rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and includes a 'Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' of 2.5, covering preparation, teaching, administration, assessment, marking, and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract

Fixed term, part time contract teaching. The closing date for applications is 12 July 2026. Interviews will be held on 28 July 2026.
