The UCL Estate comprises over 240 buildings, more than 6.5 million square feet of academic accommodation and around 4500 owned student bedrooms.
The location, scale, variety and complexity of the estate are unparalleled in the sector, including world-leading research, teaching, offices and student accommodation within our Bloomsbury and UCL East campus, at Stratford.
Together, Campus Experience and Infrastructure and Estates Development (CE&I and ED) is responsible for managing all aspects of the UCL Estate from the strategic to the operational, including property asset management, master-planning, capital projects and seamless end to end operational support. The function comprises approximately. 350 FM and property professionals, project managers and customer facing operational colleagues.
About the roleWe are seeking an Assistant Director (Major Projects) to join our Estates team in a key leadership role. The Capital Projects Programme team is responsible for managing the delivery of all capital works across the UCL Estate, from inception through to operational phases. This includes new builds, refurbishment, adaptation, as well as infrastructure and public realm works. Our projects are bespoke facilities designed and constructed to industry-leading standards.
The AD (Major Projects) will be responsible for leading the completion of several key projects currently in delivery, as well as bringing forward pipeline projects within the portfolio. In this role, you will be responsible for working with stakeholders and project partners developing and delivering projects, with the support of your consultant and project management staff who will work under your guidance to deliver projects across the UCL Estate. Major projects currently in delivery within the Capital Programme include;
- Project Oriel, the new £500m Moorfields Eye Hospital JV with our Institute of Ophthalmology
- The Institute of Neurology, Dementia Research Institute (ION-DRI), a £300m a new landmark facility at 256 Grays Inn Road.
- Greys Inn Road masterplan, future phases
- UCL East Masterplan, future phases
Things you'll need in order to do this job include:
- Formal qualification in an engineering/construction discipline to meet PAS8673 and to membership level of relevant professional body
- Experience necessary to provide professional, technical and strategic advice relating to all phases of the build environment life cycle, at a senior management level.
- Experience of establishing and delivering projects against campus wide strategies such as Safety, Sustainability and Inclusivity and evidence of delivering innovative solutions to produce enhanced outcomes
- Relevant experience in a project and programme leadership role with responsibility for procuring and managing a portfolio of major capital projects in live, physically congested, high public footfall urban environments
- Strategic planning including sourcing options and procurement for capital programmes
- Strong knowledge and experience of contract management and procurement, cost management and budgeting and supply chain management and reporting
- A full understanding of Safety management, and experience in the active delivery of this whilst leading a proactive and responsible safety culture
- Excellent technical expertise and understanding of building systems, legislation and service requirements across a diverse portfolio
- Business administration including business planning, budget management, accounting, IT and business processes
- A positive and creative "can do" approach to project delivery and leadership
- A natural collaborator, working cross functionally and at all levels, internally and externally.
