Full time Anglican Chaplain at HMP Onley - provide faith/belief and pastoral care to prisoners and staff as part of a multi faith chaplaincy team.
Overview of the jobThe role involves delivering faith and pastoral care to prisoners and staff from your own faith tradition while also supporting the needs of people of other faiths and none.
SummaryThe job holder will work with colleagues to ensure the delivery of PSI 05/2016 Faith and Pastoral Care for Prisoners (or its successor policy framework) and the broader chaplaincy work of faith and non faith based courses. They will engage with and build contacts within their faith community to aid offender resettlement.
They are responsible for personal spiritual health and development, allowing time for private prayer, reflection, study and retreat. The position is non rotational, non operational, and has no line management duties.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties- Provide guidance and pastoral care to prisoners, staff and their families in line with your faith/belief system.
- Plan and lead worship, meditation, prayer and faith specific meetings; ensure chaplaincy care is available at all times.
- Facilitate worship and study opportunities; work with other chaplains, the Managing Chaplain, volunteers and external groups to maintain worship facilities.
- Contribute to the development of local policy, procedures and practice.
- Provide pastoral care and crisis support to prisoners; mentor other chaplains and volunteers following incidents.
- Support chaplaincy volunteers in their contributions.
- Work with the Official Prison Visitor liaison officer to promote the scheme and assist OPV volunteers.
- Keep the prison community aware of faith events and coordinate support; acquire and distribute relevant literature and materials.
- Contribute to training programmes for staff and volunteers; participate in delivering Faith Awareness Training.
- Represent the chaplaincy team at meetings and committees in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
- Actively support the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process.
- Attend relevant boards and meetings, contributing as chair or team member.
- With agreement from the Managing Chaplain, take on additional roles such as Family Liaison Officer, volunteer coordinator, etc.
- Forge links with local faith communities and agencies to support prisoner release.

- Meet faith/belief eligibility requirements as outlined in the Group Profile.
- Deliver all aspects of the role confidently in English or Welsh (where specified in Wales).
- Complete the specific training required for the area of specialism outlined in the job description.
Ordained Bishop, Priest or Deacon
- Ordained member of the Anglican Communion (or a church part of the Porvoo Agreement).
- Minimum of three years in Holy Orders.
- Formal endorsement via the Diocesan Bishop's licence.
Reader, Religious Brother/Sister, Church Army Evangelist
- Reader as per Canon E4 or equivalent in other Anglican provinces.
- Religious sister/brother, Church Army Evangelist or other licensed minister in the Anglican tradition, subject to agreement from the Anglican Bishop to HM Prisons.
- Formal endorsement via the Diocesan Bishop's licence (evidence required before appointment).
All applicants must:
- Sign the Church of England documentation on mutual flourishing (or the Church in Wales equivalent).
- Demonstrate knowledge of Anglican theology and religious practice.
- Have formal endorsement from the HMPPS Anglican Faith and Belief Adviser confirming eligibility and suitability.
- Obtain Diocesan DBS clearance and up to date safeguarding training.
If full time: 37 hour working week. Un social hours (outside hrs Monday - Friday) are recognised with an additional payment at the approved organisation rate.
Working Arrangements & Further InformationHybrid working is possible where business needs allow. The role can be carried out from the base location, other MoJ sites or from home - but only within the UK. Arrangements will be discussed with the successful candidate.
