AI Platform Engineer - Cloud & Infrastructure (Azure/APIM/Kubernetes/Terraform) - UN Agency Client in ROME | Fully Remote

For our world-famous UN agency client, we are looking for an experienced AI Platform Engineer - Cloud & Infrastructure.

This is primarily a senior hands-on platform and infrastructure engineering role focusing on the secure and scalable deployment of AI models, services and applications - not simply AI application development or data science.

We are particularly interested in experts who have actually designed, implemented and operated enterprise AI infrastructure on Microsoft Azure, including Azure API Management, AKS/Kubernetes, Terraform/Bicep, CI/CD and AI model serving.

  • Location: Fully Remote/Rome

  • Start: Early October 2026

  • Duration: Initially until 23 December 2026, extensions possible

  • Workload: Full-time

Duties and responsibilities

The expert will help design, implement and operate the shared cloud infrastructure required to deploy AI models, services and applications securely and at scale.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and implement shared infrastructure and platform services for AI models, applications and APIs.

  • Configure and operate Azure API Management (APIM).

  • Implement API policies covering authentication, authorisation, routing, security, load balancing and failover.

  • Enable secure and scalable access to AI services across cloud, on-premises and external environments.

  • Deploy and operate AI/ML and LLM inference workloads on AKS/Kubernetes.

  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or Bicep.

  • Design and implement CI/CD and DevSecOps pipelines for infrastructure, AI services and applications.

  • Integrate AI services into an enterprise technology environment.

  • Implement monitoring, logging, security controls and operational processes.

  • Produce technical architecture, deployment and operational documentation.

  • Support knowledge transfer and the transition of solutions into operations.

Professional requirements

  • Strong demonstrable hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure.

  • Practical experience implementing and operating Azure API Management, including policies, authentication, routing, load balancing, security and failover.

  • Strong production experience with Docker, Kubernetes and preferably Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

  • Hands-on experience with Terraform and/or Bicep.

  • Strong experience with CI/CD, DevSecOps, Git and automated deployments.

  • Experience with Azure networking, private endpoints, hybrid connectivity and secure cloud architecture.

  • Good understanding of Microsoft Entra ID, Managed Identity, RBAC, Key Vault, authentication and authorisation.

  • Strong Python and REST API development experience.

  • Practical experience deploying and operating AI/ML or Generative AI services.

  • Good understanding of enterprise API design, networking and security.

  • Ability to produce clear technical architecture and operational documentation.

  • Strong English and experience working in international teams.

Experience with the following would be highly desirable:

  • AI model serving and inference in Kubernetes.

  • vLLM, NVIDIA NIM or comparable model-serving frameworks.

  • Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI or related Azure AI services.

  • Highly available API architectures, traffic routing and failover.

  • Previous experience with UN agencies, EU institutions or other international organisations.
