Job Description

This role has a starting hourly rate of £24.63 per hour for most courses, and £28.67 per hour for courses leading to a qualification. In addition, we pay a 15% annual leave entitlement per hour. These rates include preparation and travelling time.

We are excited to be hiring new Adult Learning Tutors to join our Surrey Adult Learning Team. This is a zero hours (bank) contract. The amount of work you are offered will depend on our programme and on your availability for day, evening, and Saturday classes.

About The Role

We are looking for inspirational tutors to deliver learning to adults. If you have a passion for teaching and believe in helping adults achieve their life goals, we want to hear from you! For the full list of current subject requirements, please see the paragraphs below.

Courses are delivered face-to-face in our seven main centres in Guildford, Camberley, Farnham, Woking, Esher Green, Sunbury, and Molesey, and remotely in certain subjects (where listed below).

We are currently looking for tutors in the following areas:
  • Languages: German (Guildford - Saturdays, Camberley - Weekday daytime/Monday evening), Italian (Esher, Molesey, Camberley, Farnham - Weekday daytime/evening), Spanish (Woking - Thursday & Friday daytime, Guildford - Weekday daytime/evening). We also welcome applications from British Sign Language, Greek, Japanese.
  • Humanities: Psychology (Guildford - Weekday daytime/evening), Counselling (Weekday daytime/evening).
  • Work Skills and IT: Apple Mac Skills, Digital Skills, WordPress and web design, Social Media marketing, Book-keeping, Business Administration, Computer programming and coding, Microsoft Office 365.
  • GCSE English, Functional Skills English (current classroom teaching experience essential).
  • GCSE Maths, Functional Skills Maths (current classroom teaching experience essential).
  • ESOL (Camberley, Molesey, Sunbury, Guildford) (current classroom teaching experience essential).
  • Arts & Crafts: Basket Weaving, Bookbinding, Jewellery (Guildford & Woking), Life Drawing, Mosaics, Pottery, Print Making, Sewing (for Home and Clothes), Soft Furnishings, Furniture Restoration, Photography, Sculpture (Camberley), Urban Sketching, Woodwork (Molesey), Writing for Children (Guildford).
  • Healthy Living: Cookery tutors with specialisms such as world cuisine, patisserie, or breadmaking (Camberley, Guildford & Molesey - Weekday daytime, evening, and Saturdays). Physical Activity tutors including Yoga, Tai Chi, Pilates, Exercise, and all forms of Dance (All centres - Weekday daytime, evening, and Saturdays). Bridge & Chess tutors (All centres - Weekday daytime, evening, and Saturdays).
  • Supported Learning: Digital Skills, Photography & Everyday English (Esher - daytimes); Everyday English, Digital Skills & Woodwork (Molesey - daytimes); Mini Enterprise & Mind, Body and Relationships (Sunbury - daytimes); Digital Skills, Everyday English, Photography & Pottery (Woking - daytimes). Everyday English & Maths (Farnham - daytimes).
  • Family Learning: Courses for parents including understanding children and teenagers' anxiety, children's behavior (including ADHD and autism), Maths, and English. Delivered online and face-to-face in schools and Family Centres across Surrey. Online learners need a laptop with webcam, Wi-Fi, and IT proficiency.
  • Passport to Wellbeing: Supporting learners with wellbeing difficulties through activities such as Arts and Crafts, Pottery, Woodwork, and Gardening.

You will be supported by a professional and experienced line manager. Our tutors ensure learners are supported to develop their skills, confidence, and employment opportunities through teaching and learning.

A DBS 'Disclosure and Barring Service' check is required, with further details discussed at interview. Online searches may be conducted on shortlisted applicants.

About The Team

Surrey Adult Learning delivers over 3000 courses annually and employs over 200 part-time tutors. As a tutor, you will focus on teaching, inspiring, and supporting adult learners to complete courses and progress to higher skills.

Courses include English & Maths, ESOL, Arts & Crafts, Languages, Exercise & Dance, Humanities, Work Skills & IT, and Cookery, along with specific programmes by Supported Learning, Family Learning, and Passport to Wellbeing teams.

Shortlisting Criteria
  • Hold a professional UK teaching qualification (e.g., Level 3 Award in Education & Training or equivalent), or be working towards it.
  • Evidence of qualifications and expertise in your subject area, with a passion for teaching.
  • Experience of teaching adults in a classroom environment and commitment to providing excellent learning opportunities.
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies and resources to meet learner needs.
  • Confidence in using IT.
