Acute Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner

The closing date is 22 January 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced nurse to join our innovative, nurse-led Acute Oncology Team, supporting the emergency care and management of patients with cancer.

This is a 12-month fixed-term / secondment post to cover maternity leave. Applicants must meet all the essential qualification criteria to be considered for this role.

The successful post holder will join a well-established and highly regarded team, providing leadership and professional guidance to colleagues across the Trust to support optimal patient care and pathway management. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with advanced nursing skills, excellent communication and organisational abilities, and extensive experience in the assessment and management of cancer and cancer treatment-related complications.

You will have the opportunity to utilise your expert clinical skills to deliver all aspects of acute oncology care, including inpatient advice and management, supporting the Emergency Department with admission avoidance, Cancer Same Day Emergency Care (cSDEC), emergency presentations of Malignancy of Unknown Origin (MUO), and delivery of our award-winning Brain Tumour Optimisation Pathway.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will rotate between St Helens and Whiston Hospitals, supporting both inpatient and ambulatory cancer pathways. The service currently operates Monday to Friday, including bank holidays, with plans to progress towards a 7-day service.

The successful applicant will demonstrate resilience and professional drive, with a clear commitment to reviewing, developing, and enhancing the services we provide. In return, you will receive mentorship alongside educational and academic opportunities to support progression towards advanced nursing practice.

You will work closely with medical oncology teams, in collaboration with hospital and community services, to deliver holistic, patient-centred care. The MWL Acute Oncology Team is at the forefront of innovation, and you will play a key role in delivering education to healthcare professionals across the Trust, contributing to service development (including protocol and policy development), and representing the Trust within regional and national Acute Oncology Groups.
