Job Description

Job Title: Substation Design Engineer - 400kV
Location: Various National Grid Sites (UK)
Contract Type: Permanent
Reports to: Design/Project Engineer

Are you an experienced Substation Design Engineer with a strong background in 400kV transmission projects? This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in the design and delivery of high-voltage substation infrastructure across National Grid sites, ensuring designs meet the highest safety and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead or support the design of 400kV substation layouts, electrical schematics, cable routing, and earthing systems.
  • Ensure all designs comply with National Grid Technical Policies (TPs) and Technical Specifications (TSs).
  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams, including civil, protection, and control engineers.
  • Prepare and review design documentation such as Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), General Arrangements (GAs), and equipment drawings.
  • Interface with National Grid's design approval processes, including DRN and IDC/IDR reviews.
  • Conduct site surveys and provide technical design support during construction and commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and all relevant health and safety legislation.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3-5 years' experience in high-voltage (HV) substation design, with specific knowledge of 400kV systems.
  • Demonstrable experience working on National Grid projects, with knowledge of NG standards and processes.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bentley Substation, or similar design software.
  • Strong understanding of the UK Grid Code, NG standards, and IEC/BS standards.
