NHS Lothian University Hospitals Division Position: Consultant Medical Microbiologist or Consultant Medical Microbiologist with Infectious Diseases

Applicants are welcome for the above post to join a multi-disciplinary team of Consultants providing an infection service covering the whole of Lothian.

Our goal is to make best use of available expertise in the management of infection for optimal patient care in our region. To achieve this we aim to develop multi-disciplinary teams comprising colleagues with specialist knowledge in microbiology, virology, infectious diseases and infection prevention and control at each of our base hospitals.

The post holder will play a significant role in the clinical infection diagnostic team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) and Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP), both based at the Little France campus in Edinburgh. This includes provision of specialist infection advice for paediatrics, alongside rotational infection service input into adult tertiary referral centres on-site including neurosurgery and other specialities, delivery of infection liaison service and antimicrobial stewardship.

We have excellent working relationships with clinical teams and have ongoing collaboration with researchers in Edinburgh and beyond. Specialist Virology services, along with five Scottish reference laboratories, dealing with Mycobacteria, STEC, Bacterial Sexually-Transmitted Infections, Human Papilloma Virus and Viral Haemorrhagic Fever, are also based in the department of Laboratory Medicine at the RIE. The laboratories have full UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation.

The post-holder will have a CCT in Microbiology or Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or be within 6 months at interview date of achieving this. On-call frequency for Microbiology is currently 1 in 11 / 1 in 12 with prospective cover and a 3% availability supplement.

The vacancy is full-time, but part-time or job-share applicants will be considered.
