Senior Service Designer
Rate: £570 per day Inside IR35
Location: Remote with occasional travel to Leeds
Duration: ASAP start to March 2026
Sector: Large scale public sector digital programme

We are supporting a major public sector digital transformation programme and are looking for an experienced Senior Service Designer to join a blended delivery team on a high profile national application used by millions of citizens.

This role focuses on improving and expanding key user journeys within a widely used digital service. You will lead user centred design activities across the full life cycle, working closely with product, research and development teams to ensure that user needs are met and service quality is maintained at scale.

What you will be working on
  • Enhancing an existing national digital service with a focus on prescription and medication journeys
  • Producing high quality service design artefacts including service blueprints, personas, user needs maps, journey maps and future state proposals
  • Leading design thinking activities and ensuring user needs inform product decisions
  • Owning and maintaining the user needs repository
  • Supporting user research activities and usability testing
  • Working with senior stakeholders to present findings and recommendations
  • Collaborating with cross functional teams to guide delivery
Required experience
  • Strong background in service design within public sector digital services
  • Experience working in GDS or large scale NHS digital environments
  • Deep understanding of design thinking and user centred design
  • Proven ability to lead service design work from discovery through to delivery
  • Skilled in creating service maps, blueprints, personas, prototypes and journey artefacts
  • Ability to synthesise user insights and translate them into well informed service improvements
  • Comfortable running workshops and presenting work to senior stakeholders
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to balance user needs, technical constraints and delivery goals
