Medical Retina Research Fellow

Job Title: Medical Retina Research Fellow

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Type: Fixed term

Duration: 12 months

Purpose: The post is a fixed term training contract designed to provide structured training and supervised clinical development for ophthalmology specialty training. The postholder will also contribute to service delivery and gain defined educational experiences aligned with the specialty curriculum.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care for complex retinal conditions including Uveitis, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vein Occlusions, and inherited retinal diseases.
  • Assist with cataract surgery lists to broaden surgical exposure.
  • Contribute to national clinical trials and research projects.
  • Publish research findings, participate in teaching programmes, and complete audit projects.
Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • A minimum of 12 months ophthalmology practice
  • Experience in Medical Retina
  • At least 12 months' NHS experience
  • Post CCT

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Able to perform intravitreal injections
  • Able to perform laser treatments for diabetic retinopathy
