Applications are invited for substantive consultant posts with as main interests in General Subspecialties. This is a full time post at 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal and revalidation. (Up to two substantive posts are available).
Applicants should have the FRCA or an equivalent qualification and have suitable experience as described in the person specification in the job plan description. They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of their expected CCT date at the time of interview. Experience of NHS working practices and systems, (minimum two years working for the NHS) is essential.
For the timetable /DCC please see detailed info in the main advert. Specialist skills required include advanced training in perioperative medicine, trauma and regional anaesthesia. A proportion of the workload (flexible annualised sessions) has to be delivered at prime time hours, at weekends and/or in the evenings. The workload during general on calls does not ordinarily include obstetrics, paeds, ITU, major trauma, neuro, cardiac, which are all covered by separate consultant rotas. However, at times when workload exceeds manpower, you may be asked to help consultant colleagues on different rotas (example major trauma, obstetrics). We will support applicants to pursue their subspecialty interests, as far as practicable.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will join the General Group of Anaesthetists which consists of approximately 35 Consultants and the Trauma Anaesthetists (approx. 14). We are a friendly, approachable, dynamic and diverse group, who are enthusiastic in both teaching colleagues and learning new skills from colleagues. There is emphasis on wellbeing and supporting each other. The case mix at St George's tends to be complex and challenging. Given the huge expertise in the department, it is easy to seek advice and discuss with an expert in a certain field or acquire new skills. We actively encourage our colleagues to pursue the diverse range of opportunities that arise within the department, the Trust, medical school and South Thames School of Anaesthesia. Several colleagues have held national leadership roles.
This is a great opportunity to join our award winning anaesthetic department, which is a highly diverse and inclusive workforce of over 100 Anaesthetic Consultants providing expertise in a wide variety of anaesthetic subspecialties including Paediatrics, Neurosurgery, Cardio thoracics, Intensive Care, Acute and Chronic Pain relief and academic positions in SGUL. There are over 60 trainees from St George's School of Anaesthesia and clinical fellows who rotate through the anaesthesia subspecialties.

Job responsibilities- The successful applicant will need commitment, enthusiasm, leadership qualities and the ability to work as part of a large multidisciplinary team.
- The post holder will be required to participate in clinical governance activities within the service centre.
- The post holder will be expected to observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures drawn up with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of St George's Healthcare NHS Trust.

Person Specification Essential Qualifications- Holder of Certificate of completion of training (CCT) training in Anaesthesia or equivalent
- FRCA or equivalent
- Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with licence to practice
- A minimum of 2 years experience of working in the NHS
- MSc, PhD or similar, echocardiography skills
- Publications in peer reviewed literature
- Publications in book chapters or poster presentations at conferences
- Publications in journals and/or letters published
- Presentations at national/international conferences
- Presentations at departmental/hospital level / Grand Rounds or similar
- Research experience example Local Investigator etc
- Major Trauma and orthopaedics
- Advanced regional skills (including nerve catheters)
