Driver - Transport & Logistics

We are recruiting a full time driver on a 37.5 hour contract, Monday to Sunday. These roles are to cover shifts for linen delivery, specimen delivery and pharmacy deliveries and patient transfers, plus other adhoc work. Join our dedicated transport team to make a difference. As an NHS driver, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our healthcare services by transporting patients, medical supplies, medication, specimens, and other transport related activities.

Requirements
  • Full clean UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience in dealing professionally with staff and members of the public.
  • Willingness to work additional hours to cover holidays and sickness.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other transport colleagues on ad hoc assignments.
  • Physically fit to move patients in wheelchairs in and out of a wheelchair assisted vehicle and move heavy hospital equipment.

Main duties of the job

NHS drivers have a variety of responsibilities that are essential for the smooth operation of healthcare services. Their main duties typically include:

  • Delivering Medical Supplies: Ensuring timely and secure delivery of medical supplies, equipment, and medications to various NHS sites, including hospitals, clinics, and patient homes where required.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Performing daily checks, including checking oil, fuel, tyre pressure, and ensuring the vehicle is clean and well stocked.
  • Adhering to Safety Protocols: Following strict health and safety guidelines, including infection control procedures.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of deliveries, pick ups, mileage, and any incidents or issues encountered during duties.
  • Assisting Patients: Providing assistance to patients with mobility issues, helping them get in and out of the vehicle safely, and ensuring they are comfortable during transport.
  • Communication: Communicating effectively with healthcare staff, patients, and sometimes patients' families to ensure clear information exchange and coordination.

These duties require NHS drivers to be highly responsible, reliable, and empathetic, with good driving skills and a thorough understanding of health and safety regulations.

Job responsibilities
  • Keep accurate personal records such as timesheets.
  • Manage workload to maximise efficiency of deliveries and collections.
  • Provide problem solving to address on site customer inquiries.
  • Maintain the standard of service as agreed, keeping within timed schedules, and working unsupervised.
  • Plan own day to day work tasks.
  • Supply a delivery and collection service as laid down by current schedules.
  • Use deliveries and collections to include items such as case notes and internal post per scheduled or non scheduled journeys to provide an efficient service.
  • Keep documented reports associated with each journey - e.g. vehicle log sheets, mileage - to comply with Transport Regulations.
  • Check the vehicle each day, prior to use, for fuel, oil, water, tyres, lights, and keep documented records (defect reports where required) and any other associated forms, in order to maintain the safety of the driver, vehicle and other road users. Take the vehicle to the hirer for repairs, servicing and MOTs.
  • Keep the vehicle clean inside and out, to prevent dirt and cross contamination.
  • Be responsible for safe loading and unloading of goods, observing associated Health and Safety guidelines, to prevent injury to self and other persons.
  • Move case notes between sites as necessary, e.g. distribution and/or emergency movement, ensuring that customer daily requirements are met.
  • Maintain patient safety through rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust Policies, for the prevention and control of infection, including hand hygiene. Undertake appropriate mandatory training and updates in infection prevention and control.
  • Communicate with other staff at various levels within the Trust.
  • Establish good working relationships with all customers to maintain the agreed level of service.
  • Plan and prioritise day to day workload as appropriate.
  • Keep all relevant parties informed of any changes that may occur outside your agreed schedule.
Person Specification Skills
  • Demonstrate good driving practice, following road traffic regulations, being aware of all other road users, including pedestrians, to ensure safety of self and others.
  • Communicate with staff and customers in a courteous and diplomatic manner to maintain good working relationships and be an effective team member.
  • Work unsupervised and demonstrate use of initiative.
  • Manage time and prioritise tasks.
  • Carry out manual handling.
Qualifications
  • Clean Driving Licence for use up to 7.5 tonne weight.
