Job overview

Join our group of dedicated Critical Care consultants, in a replacement substantive consultant post, as we prepare to move into our new state of the art Critical Care Unit in Brighton

We run 39 Critical Care beds between Brighton and Haywards Heath within the United Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

We are the major trauma and regional tertiary centre covering the Kent, Surrey and Sussex area, including neurosciences and cardiac surgery as well as being an Academic department with close links to our medical school and with an exciting portfolio of local and international research studies.

We are looking for a dynamic enthusiastic colleague to work with us and our multi-professional team to continue our drive to deliver excellent care and outcomes, as well as develop our services and processes.

Brighton and Haywards Heath benefit from their situation on the coast, as well as beautiful countryside respectively, with the South Downs National Park in between. We would hope that potential candidates would join us in taking advantage of these wonderful opportunities.

Main duties of the job

The new Appointee will undertake on-call work, with the team of 18 other Consultants, at both the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital. This forms two 7 day 1:6 rotas at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and a 7 day 1:6 rota at the Princess Royal Hospital.

All rotas have commitments only to Critical Care, and are slightly variable between Consultants. For these posts the on-call will be split into thirds between the three units. On-call activities will be tied to day-time duty on the respective Critical Care Unit to allow continuity of care and a block system of Critical Care cover. The posts also incorporates a weekly daytime responsibility for additional cover at the Royal Sussex County site, worked between ICU on call commitments. Further direct clinical input to Critical Care, outside on-call and duty periods, will be responsive to service need on both sites but is likely to be mainly at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Direct clinical care in complimentary specialty can be undertaken at both or either site depending on service need in that speciality; all complimentary specialties will be considered depending on the needs of the Trust, but anaesthesia, critical care, medicine and emergency medicine would be preferred. For this type of job plan the Trust currently requires that one Supporting Programmed Activity is conducted in the Trust on a weekly basis.
