Job Description
Nutrition Support Nurse

The Nutrition Support Nurse plays a vital role within the multidisciplinary Nutrition Team at St Mark's - National Bowel Hospital. This post provides support to the Clinical Nurse Specialists and Nurse Consultant in providing specialist knowledge and input surrounding the safe and effective delivery of nutrition support (oral, enteral and parenteral nutrition) for inpatients, and outpatients receiving home parenteral and enteral nutrition. You will need to be an effective team player, have good organisational skills and be committed to providing a high standard of care.

This position is based at St Mark's Hospital, at the Central Middlesex hospital site, Park Royal, London.

Main duties of the job
  • Review, and provide specialist clinical care for inpatients and outpatients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition.
  • Provide training for patients to be independent with parenteral nutrition.
  • Co ordinate the safe discharge of patients receiving parenteral and enteral nutrition.
  • Facilitate training for healthcare professionals.
  • Communicate with specialist homecare providers regarding the home parenteral nutrition patient cohort for St Mark's.

Person Specification Education and qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Valid NMC registration
  • Teaching experience
Knowledge and experience
  • Basic understanding of gastrointestinal conditions
  • Knowledge of artificial feeding routes and techniques
  • Post registration experience caring for patients receiving artificial nutrition
  • Knowledge of artificial nutrition in the community
Skills, abilities and attributes
  • Proficient in Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT)
  • Good time management
  • Good standard of oral and written communication
  • Phlebotomy and cannulation
  • Experience of MDT working
  • Experience of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
