NHS Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adult Inpatient

This role is a fixed term NHS Locum Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist to provide medical leadership for the Roding inpatient ward based at St Margaret's Hospital, Epping, Essex. The Consultant will provide medical leadership for a multidisciplinary team comprising resident doctors, ward nursing team, psychiatrists, CPN's, OT and psychologist.

The post holder will be expected to work closely with the ward managers and the wider MDT to provide a safe and effective service. The Consultant will work closely with the relevant community teams and contribute to providing an effective care pathway for patients across the service.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients on Roding ward who are detained under the Mental Health Act. The post holder will carry out the duties expected of an RC in a timely manner and be knowledgeable of the Mental Capacity Act.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have responsibility for the clinical care of patients admitted to the in patient unit on the ward. The post holder will work closely with the team and the ward manager to ensure the provision of an effective service.

Job responsibilities

Work closely with other consultant colleagues to ensure the patient journey is as smooth as possible.

Provide clinical leadership and actively liaise with general practitioners, psychiatrists, and other hospital specialists, statutory and non statutory agencies, whenever relevant to the care and treatment of patients.

Be committed to a multidisciplinary approach to care.

Use evidence based interventions at all times.

Offer a consistent response to referrers/service users regardless of origin of the referral in a timely fashion.

Offer an accurate diagnosis and timely interventions so that intensive treatment is delivered to patients, in accordance with the recovery model.

Attend Mental Health Act assessments as requested for relevant patients.

Act as the Responsible Clinician for inpatients including attending Tribunals, as necessary.

Participate in developing and maintaining care programmes for patients.

Supervise junior and middle grade doctors in the team.

Participate in the teaching programmes of the multidisciplinary team.

Contribute to the collection of clinical information to enable audit and service development.

Work closely with consultant colleagues to provide appropriate cross cover for daytime (9 am 5 pm, working days) and for periods of annual/study/special leave.

Participate in clinical governance and teaching activities.

Contribute to the day to day management and the overall service development agenda through involvement with managerial and clinical colleagues.

Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register
  • Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • On the Specialist Register with qualifications General Adult
  • Postgraduate degree in psychiatry (MRC Psych or equivalent)
  • Additional clinical qualifications
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months
  • Approved clinician status
  • Approved under Section 12
  • In good standing with GMC, with respect to warning and conditions on practice
Clinical skills, knowledge and experience
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Wide range of specialist and sub specialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service
  • Utilises a quality improvement approach to think systemically about complex problems, develop potential change ideas and test these in practice using a systematic QI methodology
