The CIE - International Commission on Illumination is an international scientific and standardization organization based in Vienna. Founded in 1913, the association is the global authority on all aspects of light and lighting - from its measurement to technical and architectural dimensions to health and well-being. As a scientific organization with National Committees and members worldwide, the CIE is a member of the International Science Council and its role as a standards developing organization is also officially recognized by bodies such as ISO and IEC.
The CIE Central Bureau in Vienna is looking for a
CIE Technical and Scientific Manager
35-40 hours/week
Starting date: as soon as possible in 2026
Aufgaben
The core of the job is the publication, coordination, and quality assurance of all CIE publications as a scientific and standardization organization. You will work in an integrative role in the CIE Central Bureau and its publishing house and collaborate closely with the CIE Divisions and their Technical committees, Research Forums, and the Technical Management Board. As an expert in the Central Bureau for the thematic and publication-related matters of the CIE, you will take on supervisory and advisory/support tasks as well as the reviewing and editing of all CIE publications. In terms of external cooperation, you will be involved in scientific and technical events and networks of the CIE, where you will contribute to the reputation and global leadership role of the CIE.
- Coordination of the publication process for CIE publications (from the committees' drafts to the final text and marketing material);
- Review and editing (content editor and technical review as well as linguistic, formal and copy edit) of all CIE publications (International Standards, Technical Reports, Technical Notes, Position Statements);
- Data and process management for scientific and technical publishing, in particular carrying out the balloting procedures for CIE publications to reach consensus and international approval;
- Collaboration with the CIE leadership and experts, in particular providing advice and support on publications-related processes, conventions, terminology, as well as collaboration to continuously improve the CIE Code of Procedure, related CIE Policies and documents
- Collaboration in the creation and coordination of programmes for CIE events (including, for example, abstract review procedures);
- Technical coordination tasks with external standardization organizations such as ISO, IEC, CEN, and their committees;
- Collaboration in the maintenance and further development of the CIE International Lighting Vocabulary (ILV), including its harmonization with the IEC Electropedia;
- Supporting the CIE Secretary General in other tasks;
- Position-specific collaboration in all tasks of the CIE Central Bureau as well as collaboration and/or management of future-oriented CIE projects (e.g., discoverability of CIE publications).
Profil
- Degree (at least a master's, doctorate preferred) in a discipline related to light and lighting (physics, engineering, architecture, biology, psychology, etc.);
- Academic specialization in relation to light and lighting and/or relevant professional experience in the light and lighting sector;
- Excellent written English skills, very good spoken English skills; German an advantage;
- Excellent knowledge of Word, Excel and PDF, and willingness to develop other skills relevant to publishing (e.g., Latex, metadata management); basic programming skills (e.g., Python, Powerquery) and knowledge in structured data formats (XML, JSON) are an advantage;
- Interest in the process of and developments in scientific, technical and standards publishing (style guides, writing and publishing tools, research integrity, open science, FAIR principles, etc.); experience an advantage;
- Interest to work in a field related to standardization, certification and accreditation;
- Ability to work independently within organizational guidelines and the CIE's strategic goals;
- Ability to work efficiently to a deadline while maintaining a high level of detail;
- Ability to work collaboratively and constructively in the editing and review of written publications in order to ensure the quality of CIE's publications;
- Ability to adapt work style and behaviour to multicultural and different organizational contexts, as well as ability to work in a team;
- Willingness for occasional travel and work outside usual business hours to support international activities.

Austria pays 14 salaries (two of which taxed preferably), international applicants please compare only net annual salaries. For this position, an adaptable salary (depending on prior experience) within a scheme starting EUR 3,471.00 (14x, 40 hours) is valid and development pathways are offered. We expect that a suitable candidate for this position could start with a salary of around EUR 4.200 (14x, gross annual around EUR 60.000, net annual around EUR 41.000) and within a 5-year-framework develop on the job to a more senior profile in the role, linked to a financial development pathway.
